Mr. Davis is being held in Pakistan. He holds a diplomatic passport granting him immunity under the Vienna Convention if recognized by the Pakistani government.
U.S. President Barack Obama has called for his immediate release.
“We’ve got a very simple principle here that every country in the world that is party to the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations has upheld in the past and should uphold in the future, and that is, if our diplomats are in another country, then they are not subject to that country’s local prosecution,” Mr. Obama told reporters in a press conference last week.
According to The New York Times, Mr. Davis was responsible for tracking Pakistani militants with known connections to the government while working in a safe house in the eastern city of LaHore.
The Obama administration has labeled his detention as an attempt to crack down on U.S. officers and contractors trying to gain entry to Pakistan.
“It’s a public disaster,” Aarya Hussein, a resident of Islamabad, told Politically Illustrated. “People here are calling for the death sentence and burning the American flag.”
“He’ll be returned to the United States for billions.”
