WASHINGTON (Politically Illustrated) – Al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri was killed in Iraq according to Iraq Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

“The attack was carried out by ground forces, which surrounded the house, and also through the use of missiles,” Mr. Maliki told news organizations during a special conference. “U.S. forces also participated.”

Mr. Maliki said Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, the leader of Islamic State of Iraq, was also killed by American forces.

The announcement comes as leaders in Iraq are in talks to form a new coalition government after a March 7 election produced no clear winner.

A special elections panel is set to recount votes in Baghdad which might benefit Mr. Maliki.

“Potentially the most significant blow to al Qaeda in Iraq since the beginning of the insurgency,” Gen. Raymond Odierno told The Wall Street Journal.
