SAN FRANCISCO (Politically Illustrated) – U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords will undergo surgery to replace part of her skull, more than four months after a failed assassination plot by alleged gunman Jared Lee Loughner left her in a precarious situation, according to medical doctors.

Doctors removed a segment of her skull shortly after the shooting to allow space for her brain to swell.

The surgery, the latest sign Mrs. Giffords is making a strong recovery, comes a day before watching husband, Mark Kelly, rocket to space on the final mission of space shuttle Endeavour.

The evening before the launch, Mr. Kelly and Mrs. Giffords exchanged wedding rings at an exclusive beachfront house.

“Mark wanted a part of Gabby to go into space with him and Gabby wanted a part of him to keep here on Earth,” a spokesperson for the couple told The Houston Chronicle.

Despite the tremendous progress made in four months, it is still unclear whether Mrs. Giffords will be well enough to continue to represent Arizona.

“Her personality’s 100 percent there,” Mr. Kelly told CBS News. “You know it’s difficult for her to walk. The communication skills are difficult at this point.”
