WASHINGTON (Politically Illustrated) – The Supreme Court has ruled against keeping teenagers locked up for life without parole if the juvenile has not committed murder.

The Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 vote saying the Constitution provides a second opportunity for a teenager serving life sentences.

The case involved Terrance Graham, who was arrested and jailed for a couple armed robberies when he was 16 and 17, according to the Associated Press. Mr. Graham is now 22 serving a life sentence.

“The state had denied him any chance to later demonstrate that he is fit to rejoin society based solely on a non-homicide crime that he committed while he was a child in the eyes of the law,” said Justice Anthony Kennedy, who wrote for the majority. “This the Eighth Amendment does not permit.”

Justice Kennedy joined other leading liberal justices in the ruling.
