“We will concentrate all efforts on finding a political and diplomatic solution. These efforts have not yet been exhausted,” said Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, reported by the AFP.
The comments come as Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was in France for a two-day diplomatic visit with Nicolas Sarkozy.
“Our appeals [for Tehran] to work on a peaceful nuclear program under control of the international community have not borne any fruit so far,” said Mr. Medvedev during a press conference with Mr. Sarkozy. “These sanctions should be calibrated and smart. These sanctions should not target the civilian population,” he said.
Mr. Medvedev’s statement was seen as a gradual shift in tone against Iran at a time when China is reluctant to support additional sanctions.
“How can we tell Russian leaders, ‘We need you in order to make peace, in order to resolve crises in the world, such as the major Iranian crisis, but we do not trust you, we will not work with you on the Mistral BPC’?” said Mr. Sarkozy, reported by the AFP.
