“Just last week, there was a bipartisan bill proposed by Senator Baucus and Senator Grassley that would have covered these extension of unemployment benefits,” said Mr. Bunning, in a statement on his website. “Senator Reid did not allow that bill to come to the floor, and instead substituted his jobs bill.”
Mr. Bunning is calling for unanimous consent among senators in order to advance the bill.
“It might work under the Senate rules that they can do that, but it certainly doesn’t work for American families,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), reported by the WSJ. “I hope Republicans will reconsider and think about their constituents standing in the unemployment line as we speak.”
Blocking the bill will impact 100,000 with unemployment benefits set to expire soon and delay over 41 transportation projects around the nation.
“If we can’t find $10 billion to pay for something we all support, we will never pay for anything on the floor of this U.S. Senate,” said Mr. Bunning.
