“It’s pretty simple in this respect: I went through something that caused me a great deal of soul searching and self-reflection. Right now, a personal life is of greater value. Emotional connections that are real and loving and personal just trump everything else,” said Mr. Kennedy.
The announcement comes as a recent poll showed Mr. Kennedy facing a tough re-election campaign after continued issues of addiction.
“There’s a hole in the soul that we all try to fill, sometimes with the wrong things,” said Kennedy. “Society would tell us to fill it with consumerism. But it’s only really filled through love and service, by serving a high purpose. By doing God’s will.”
A poll conducted by WPVI-TV showed 62% of Rhode Island voters rated Mr. Kennedy unfavorable and only 35% said they would vote to re-elect him.
