“[It would be] hard to imagine the United States Senate without John McCain, especially in the critical times we find ourselves in, with double-digit unemployment, a mountain of debt imperiling future generations and a global threat from jihadists bent on destroying our way of life,” said Mr. Romney, reported by Fox News.
The endorsement comes as Mr. McCain is battling a partisan republican J.D. Hayworth, who was ousted in 2006 by Democrat Harry Mitchell. Mr. Hayworth now hosts a conservative radio program.
“I think we all respect John. I think his place in history is secure. But after close to a quarter-century in Washington, it’s time for him to come home,” said Mr. Hayworth, reported by Fox News.
Sarah Palin is expected to campaign for Mr. McCain in Phoenix on March 26 and host a rally the following day.
Both Mr. Romney and Ms. Palin are expected to assist Mr. McCain with gaining support from core conservatives who favor Mr. Hayworth.
