Dogs, just like humans, need proper nutrition to remain healthy and happy. And there is more to feeding a dog than just the brand of packed food that you choose. It would help if you made several decisions when feeding your canine friend. While most dogs enjoy eating, others do not like mealtime, and it takes some effort for the dog parent to get them to eat.
Other dogs also have some weird habits like guarding their foods against humans and other dogs.
Although some people feed their furry friends the same food they eat, it may not be a good idea because some human foods do not go well with dogs.
Here are some tips that can help you when it comes to feeding your dogs, no matter the type and age of your dog:
Feed Your Dogs Separately
If you have one dog, you are sorted on ensuring each dog feeds separate from others. But if you have several dogs, it would be best to separate them when feeding. There are so many reasons you should feed each dog alone. One reason is that you will tell if there is a dog that is not feeding, for instance, if it is unwell.
Sometimes, you will need to administer medication with food, so having each dog feeding alone will ensure only the sick one takes medicine. Also, when each dog is feeding separately, it will not have to gulp food so that others do not eat its share of food, and will not promote hiding habit since the dog has no fear of another one clearing the food for it. And there are other reasons.
Slow Down the Dog’s Eating
No matter the size of the dog, it would not be suitable for them to eat fast. It is even a big problem for the bigger dogs because they could overfeed and become obese and other issues. You can use “slow feeder” bowls or food toys to ensure they do not eat fast. However, choose feeders with hard plastics because some dogs can bite soft plastic and rubber and swallow them.
Change Diet Gradually
If you decide to change your canine friend’s diet, you should not do it abruptly but instead, do it gradually. The best way to do this is to mix small quantities of the new food with the old food and keep increasing the amount of new food each day, as you reduce the amount of food in each serving. Eventually, you dog will get used to the new food and have no problem switching.
